In 1993 he joined the San Antonio Police Department, starting on West Patrol Dog Watch and averaging roughly twenty calls a night. He retired from SAPD on July 31st, 2018, and was standing in a high school classroom that same August. From there Kevin taught law enforcement for four years at Douglas MacArthur High School and four more at Samuel Clemens High School before moving to the first responder academy, where he now helps prepare young men and women who want to become police officers and firefighters. Along the way he funneled dozens of students into the SAPD Public Safety Corps pipeline, and today former students of his serve at SAPD, Bexar County, Comal County, and Guadalupe County. For our inaugural episode of the new San Antonio's INFLUENCE Magazine Show, we've had the honor to sit down with the newly elected Judge of Bexar County: The Honorable Peter Sakai. Judge Peter Sakai's family history is a testament to the American Dream. His grandparents, humble farmers from Japan, could never have imagined the incredible achievements of their grandson. His father, Pete, suffered from the abhorrent violation of civil rights that were the Japanese Internment Camps, an experience that inspired Peter to defend the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Driven by his passion for justice, Peter graduated from the prestigious University of Texas with a degree in 1976 and a law degree in 1979. Throughout his career, he has used his legal knowledge to serve others, first as an Appellate Assistant D.A. and then as a successful solo law practitioner. But Peter's true calling was serving as a judge, where he created innovative programs to protect children and families. Under his leadership, adoptions of foster children increased 1000%. Peter's visionary leadership resulted in the creation of programs like the Family Drug Court, Early Childhood Court, and College Bound Docket, which have become nationally recognized models. Peter's success is a testament to the support of his family, including his wife Rachel, a true public servant in her own right. Together, they have two children and two grandchildren. Last year, Peter stepped down from his bench to run for County Judge - an election that he recently won. He is committed to working collaboratively to improve the economy, justice system, and health, wellness, and safety of Bexar County residents, as well as addressing neglected infrastructure needs. Judge Sakai's out of the box thinking and consensus building have made him one of the most respected leaders in Bexar County, who is also known for his integrity, hard work, and ethics.
